Dear Hobie sailors,
The Hobie Australian Hobie Championships will start this month and has attracted a string of former World Hobie Champions and past and present Australian Champions, European, Hong Kong, New Caledonian and Fijian all joining the party. The organisers are predicting a 100+ Hobie 16’s on the water. Undoubtedly the hottest Hobie racing over the Christmas New Year will take place down under. So while many in the Northern Hemisphere put their boats away for winter there is plenty of top Hobie racing happening.
Fiji Hobie Nationals will be held on the 4-5 December in Suva.
ISAF in November approved the Hobie Wild Cat as an ISAF Class. This is an important step for the Hobie Wild Cat and a very good achievement for a boat to be given ISAF status so quickly after being launched.
ISAF also approved the multihull discipline for the 2016 Olympics. The ISAF Events Committee voted 84% in favour of the multihull. The final vote to reinstate the multihull for the 2016 Olympics will be at the ISAF meeting in May. After the multihull discipline is approved then ISAF will look at which class will be approved.
Tanzacat 2010 has concluded and has some stunning photos and story. If you want to be part of Tanzacat 2011 you can register your interest on their web site www.tanzacat.com Look at the testimonials from the sailors to see how good this regatta is.
Last month Thai brothers Damrongsak and Kitsada Vongtim won the Asian Games in Shanwai, China. The Asian Games are the second largest sporting event behind the summer Olympics. It was a special occasion as Kitsada celebrated his birthday the day they won the Gold Medal. This was Damrongsak’s fourth Asian Games Medal (third gold) in three different classes of boats. Also retaining the Hobie 16 Titles which he won four years ago in Doha.
The 10th All-Africa Games will take place on September 3 - 18th, 2011 in Maputo, Mozambique. Maputo's hosting will be only the third time the games will have been held in the southern part of the continent. The Hobie 16 is again the boat chosen in the multihull discipline. Please contact the IHCA or Mark Kopel (RSA) as we would like to get as many eligible countries to compete.
The IHCA has a Face Book page. It is also another way to keep in contact with all your Hobie friends. It also contains some wonderful photos of past and present Hobie events. Links to You Tube to see some past Hobie regattas.
